Eastern Thailand comprises of 400 km of coastline
from Chonburi and Pattaya to Rayong, Chantaburi
and Trat. Besides the beaches, coves, bays and
beaches, Eastern Thailand is famous for fresh
seafood and local spicy cuisine along with tropical
fruits.
The archaeological excavations at Phanat Nikhom
and Bo Thong districts of Chonburi suggest the
history of Eastern Thailand to be some 2,000 years
old. During 11th to 16th centuries AD, Dvaravati
communities with strong Indian religious and artistic
influences established their stronghold in Eastern
Thailand. Found mainly in the region of Chonburi
and Chantaburi, Dvaravati communities had close
association with Dvaravati communities of Central
Thailand. Several ancient monuments representative
of Khmer style were discovered from Chantaburi
and Trat suggesting that this region was once
the part of the ancient Khmer Empire.
When Ayutthaya was occupied by the Burmese in
17677 AD, the soon-to-be-king Taksin along with
his supporters fought with the enemies from the
East Coast passing through Chonburi, Pattaya and
Rayong in the Eastern Thailand. The King Taksin
finally settled at Chantaburi and gather his forces
to eventually defeat the Burmese and achieve independence.
