Chantaburi, also known as Muang Chan is a province
in the Eastern Thailand. Prosperous with natural
resources like fruits, gems and sea products,
Chantaburi or the 'City of the Moon' has played
a vital role in the history of Thailand. The administrative
districts of Chantaburi are Muang Chantaburi,
Tha Mai, Khlung, Laem Sing, Pong Nam Ron, Makham,
Soi Dao, Na Yai Am, Kang Maeo and Khao Khitchakut
sub-district. With abundant natural beauty and
man-made attractions, Chantaburi sees a lot of
tourists. It is 245 km from Bangkok and 110 km
from Rayong.

Shrine
Located on Tha Luang Road in front of the Taksin
Military Barracks is the Chantaburi City Pillar
and Takshin Maharat Shrine. A historic building
built during the reign of King Rama VI to serve
the purpose of the Town Hall stands opposite to
them.
Takshin Maharat Memorial
Situated in the public park near the Town Hall
on Liap Noen Road, Taksin Maharat Memorial is
a statue of the king on the horse and watched
over by his four royal guards. A large pond adds
to the beauty of the park and fulfills the purpose
of a picnic spot. The pond is home to variety
of fishes.
Si Chan Road
Si Chan Road is the commercial zone of Chantaburi
and is a renowned center of the gem business.
Even though, the actual gem mining in Chantaburi
has reduced over the years, a large number of
gems and precious stones dealings with neighboring
and far-flung countries are bought and sold here.
The Gems Market is busy with activity and people
on the mornings of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Wat Phai Lom
Located across the Chantaburi River from Si Chan
Road lies the Wat Phai Lom built during the reign
of King Rama III. The walls of the temple are
ornamented with the mural paintings depicting
story of the life of Lord Buddha, Chinese floral
motifs and illustrations of the foreigners. The
architecture and decoration of the temple suggest
the contact of the people with the western world.
Catholic Church
Located on the Chanthanimit Road on the bank
of the river, the Catholic Church is the largest
structure representative of Catholic faith in
Thailand. Built in 1909 AD with Gothic architectural
style, the original roof was taken down during
World War II to make it less obvious and to prevent
it from being the possible target.
Wat Thong Thua
4 km from Chantaburi on Sukhumvit Highway, Wat
Thong Thua is the spot of an ancient Bot, which
was built over a Khmer-style temple. You may find
a large collection of ancient Khmer sculptures
such as lintels, sandstone door columns and inscription
stone at the site. In the vicinity is also the
Muang Phaniat Archaeological Site. The remains
of laterite base of a large Khmer religious sanctuary
and moats mark the southern limit of the town.
The ancient town was supposed to be inhabited
from the 12th to the 16th centuries of the Buddhist
Era.
