Established as the capital of Kingdom of Thailand
in 1782 AD, Bangkok lies on the alluvial plain
bifurcated by the Chao Phraya River. In these
two centuries, Bangkok has developed into one
of the most modern cities of the world at the
same time preserving its ancient heritage perfectly
well. With 5o districts or Khets under Bangkok,
the city provided shelter to nearly 10 million
people, i.e., almost one-tenth population of the
entire country.
The principle tourist attractions of Bangkok
are:
Grand Palace
Located in a massive complex on Na Phra Lan Road
is the Grand Palace. The palace consists of many
buildings with immensely ornamented architectural
motifs.
Vimanmek Royal Mansion
Locate on the Ratchawithi Road, Vimanmek Royal
Mansion is the largest building in the world made
completely of teak. It was removed from Ko Sichang
in Chonburi province and re-erected in the Dunsit
Palace in 1900 AD at the orders of King Rama V.
most of the rooms are used as exhibition halls
of the museum. The Abhisek Dusit Hall displays
collection of handicrafts made by rural artists
of H. M. Queen Sirikit, art objects and photography
of H.M. King Bhumibol, portraits, antique fabrics,
clocks and royal carriages.
Wat Trai Mitr
Located at the end of the Yaowarat Road near
Bangkok Railway Station, Wat Trai Mitr enshrines
the 3 m high and 5.5 tons heavy Buddha image made
entirely of gold belonging to the Sukhothai Period.
Wat Pho
Located on the Thai Wang Road adjacent to the
Grand Palace, Wat Pho is the oldest and the largest
Buddha temple in Bangkok. The temple has the gold
plated image of reclining Buddha with Mother of
Pearl soles. It is believed to be the 'Thailand's
First University' because of the murals, inscriptions
and statues, which provide knowledge to the people
on variety of topics like literature to warfare,
archaeology to geology, astronomy to medicine
and meditation to traditional Thai massage.
Wat Mahathat
Located on the Na Phra That Road, Wat Mahathat
was built under the patronage of King Rama I.
The temple also houses Mahachulalongkorn Buddhist
University, which is one of the two premier institutions
of Buddhist learning in Thailand. Here meditation
classes for foreigners are also held.
Wat Arun
Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River
and accessed either by Arun Amarin Road or by
boat from Tha Tien Pier near Wat Pho, Wat Arun
or 'The Temple of Dawn' is remarkable for a 79
m high pagoda called Phra Prang. The pagoda is
adorned with ceramic tiles and multi-colored porcelain.
It was restored and converted into the Royal Chapel
of King Taksin during the Thonburi period.
Wat Suthat
Located on the Bamrung Muang Road, Wat Suthat
is famous for the fabulous frescoes built during
the reign of King Rama III. The vihara looks marvelous
with its collection of gilded Buddha images. A
huge door with intricate carving and the masterpiece
of King Rama II's period was once the part of
the temple and is now displayed in the National
Museum. The Giant Swing or Sao Ching Cha in front
of the temple is the place to organize Brahmanical
ceremonies until the early 20th century.
Wat Ratchanatdaram
Located on Mahachai Road, Wat Ratchanatdaram
as built by King Rama III in 1846 AD. The temple
houses a one of its kind of a structure in the
whole world called Loha Prasat with 36 m height
and surrounded by 37 spires. The statue of King
Rama III is also there next to the compound.
Wat Bowon Niwet
Located on the Phra Suman Road in the Bang Lamphu
region, Wat Bowon Niwet was built in 1829 AD.
The shrine hall of Phra Phutthachinnasi house
a Buddha image molded in 1375 AD. Before ascending
the throne, King Rama IV was the Chief Abbot of
this temple. Many Chakri kings including King
Rama IV, King Rama VII and His Majesty King Bhumibol
Aduladej lived in this temple during their monk
hood.
Golden Mount
Located on the Boriphat Road, Golden Mount is
an artificial hill crowned by a pagoda made of
gold. Initiated by King Rama III and completed
by King Rama IV, the mount is 260 ft in height
from base to top. The Golden Mount is a well-known
landmarks of the old Bangkok.
National Museum
Locate near the Grand Palace, National Museum
is housed in an erstwhile palace containing several
old Thai style buildings. The museum is rich in
collection of antiquities brought from all parts
of the country. They belong to the Neolithic,
Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and the Bangkok period.
Science Museum
Located near the Eastern Bus Terminal on Sukhumvit
Road, Science Museum is an exhibition hall where
you can gain information on a variety of scientific
knowledge. The museum features an aquarium, computer
world, planetarium and many other devices built
for the purpose of education and entertainment.
Royal Barge National Museum
Located on the Khlong Bangkok Noi on the Chao
Phraya River near Phra Pin Klao Bridge, Royal
Barge National Museum is the shed where you can
see many royal barges earlier used as war vessels
and now on royal occasions. To visit the museum,
the visitors have to rent a boat at Tha Chang
Pier near the Grand Palace.
Prasart Museum
Located on the outskirts of Bangkok at 9 Soi
4 on Krungthep Kritha Road in Bang Kapi District,
Prasart Museum is a private museum with a rich
collection of artifacts from the prehistoric to
Bangkok periods representing Thai history. Replicas
of some beautiful Thai architecture are also displayed
in the museum.
Jim Thompson's Thai House
Located at the end of the Soi Kasemsan 2 opposite
the National Stadium on Rama I Road, Jim Thompson
Thai House was the typical Thai house of Jim Thompson,
an American who came to Thailand at the end of
the Second World War. He has played a major role
in revival of the Thai Silk industry. The house
has been converted into a museum with display
of Asian and other attractive antiquities of Jim
Thompson
Dusit Zoo
The Zoological Park Organization looks after
the Dusit Zoo. The zoo is rich in wildlife with
300 fauna, 1300 avifauna and 190 reptiles. The
lake adds to the beauty of the zoo where the tourist
can indulge in the pleasures of paddleboat.
Pasteur Institute or Snake Farm
Located at the angle of Henri Dunant and Rama
IV roads of Chulalongkorn Hospital, Pasteur Institute
or Snake Farm. Part of the Thai Red Cross, the
institute is visited to see the largest collection
of live poisonous snakes.
Safari World
Located at Ram Indra Road in Minburi District,
Safari World is spread over sprawling 170 acres
of land. The tourists can drive around the entire
area in their own cars or in Safari World's coaches
to look around for the wildlife. One can also
watch performances of the trained animals like
dolphin's, birds, seals and monkeys.
