Originally known as Muang Wiset Chai Chan, Ang
Thong is a small province situated on the Noi
River 108 km north of Bangkok. It was an important
outpost of Ayutthaya during the war with Burma.
During the Thon Buri Period, the majority of people
shifted to a new site on the left bank of the
Chao Phraya River. The seven districts of Ang
Thong are, namely, Amphoe Muang, Ang Thong, Wiset
Chai Chan, Chaiyo, Pho Thong, Sawaengha, Pa Mok
and Samko.
The tourist attractions in Ang Thong are:
Wat Ton Son
Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River,
is the old temple of Wat Ton Son enshrining the
image of the seated Buddha known as 'Somdet Phra
Si Muang'.
Wat Khoi
Located at Tambon Pho Rang Nok in Amphoe Pho
Thong, Wat Khoi is a riverside temple. More than
50,000 fishes of different species are found in
the Noi River in front of the temple. The Pho
Thong Fishery Office declared the area as the
Fish Sanctuary in 1985. The temple also houses
a local museum with display of variety of boats
and tools.
Wat Pa Mok Worawihan
Located in Amphoe Pa Mok on the west bank of
the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pa Mok Worawihan is
18 km to the south of Ang Thong. The temple enshrines
a 22.58 m long image of Reclining Buddha built
of brick and mortar and covered with gold.
Wat Tha Sutthawat
Located at Tambon Bang Sadet in Amphoe Pa Mok
on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat
Tha Sutthawat is 15 km to the south of Ang Thong.
The temple houses images of Buddha and historical
remains of several period. The temple has also
undergone renovation several times over the years.
Wat Chaiyo Worawihan
Located 18 km from Ang Thong on Sing Buri Route,
Wat Chaiyo Worawihan enshrines Phra Maha Phuttha
Phim. It is large image of Buddha I seated posture
deep in meditation. Constructed by King Rama IV,
the temple is also famous for sacred amulets called
'Somdet Wat Chaiyo'.
Wat Khun Inthapramun
Located en-route from ph Thong from Ang Thong,
Wat Khun Inthapramun enshrines the 50 m long image
of the Reclining Buddha in the open area. The
vihara housing the image was destroyed during
the first fall of Ayutthaya.
Pha Thamnak Khamayat
Located in a paddy field 9 km from Ang Thong
on the way to Pho Thong is a ruined pavilion made
of brick and mortar. 10 m in width and 20 m in
length, the pavilion was patronized by King Bormmakot
of Ayutthaya and was used as his residence when
he was on visit to this place. Of the entire structure,
only four wall have remained intact still the
throne hall of the pavilion gives away the traces
of its original architectural splendor.
