Visakha Puja is one of the most venerate festivals
of Thailand. Celebrated on 15th day of the increasing
moon in the 6th lunar month, Visakha Puja is a
day of religious holiday in Thailand. The Celebrated
by the rural people of the Northeastern Thailand
particularly in the Yasothon Province, Bun Bang
Fai or the Rocket Festival is celebrated every
year in the sixth lunar month, i.e., May. The
festival is celebrated in the most unusual manner
by igniting a large homemade rockets placed on
a 12 m tall bamboo launch pad. The rocket gushes
towards the sky in an incredible speed making
various noises and the people watch this spectacle
from the farms an enjoying every moment of it.
Performing traditional merit-making Buddhist rituals,
burning incense, praying and making offerings
are also the ways to celebrate the Bun Bang Fai.
The Bun Bang Fai is associated with the Fertility
Ritual and is held just prior to the rainy season.
There is a Thai Legend that the Rain God, Vassakan,
loved to be worshipped with fire. So the people
made Bung Fai or rockets to send to the heavens
to impress him. It is a ritual to evoke the Rain
God by firing rockets towards the sky so that
good rains ensure good crop.
The Rocket Launching has developed into a form
of a competition with prizes for the biggest rocket,
best explosion, greatest distance etc. The secrets
of making rockets have been passed down over the
generations. Earlier rockets were made of natural
materials but these days they are more sophisticated,
multi-chambered and scientific. The Bun Bang Fai
Rocket Festival is made more colorful be people
who assemble in colorful dresses, lively spirits
and conducting series of other competitions as
well.
